As a Senior Storage Engineer at Salesforce, you will be part of the Substrate Engineering team, a dynamic, global team delivering and supporting technology infrastructure to meet the substantial growth needs of the business. In this role, you will collaborate with the Systems, Network and Database teams in delivering innovative solutions in an agile, and dynamic environment. You will be part of a strategic team responsible for building and deploying data center PODs, as well as capacity adds/refreshes of arrays and switches, storage allocations and performance tuning in a 24x7x365 environment. Key to this position will be a focus on process automation in a secure, high-performance, highly available, and fully resilient infrastructure across multiple data centers.
Successful candidates will be recognised as technical experts in the SAN and Storage Engineering discipline and will have the ability to articulate and demonstrate both deep and broad knowledge across multiple areas of information technology in support of a SaaS/PaaS infrastructure. Must execute Salesforce production Change Management, Problem Management and Incident Response procedures
The ideal candidate will have prior experience with process automation as it applies to the provisioning of resources within their Information Technology discipline.
Must be able to develop requirements for the tool-sets required to streamline and automate system installation and configuration procedures.
May be required to define requirements for, and/or write/test custom tools to handle system automation tasks (installation, configuration, monitoring, etc).
Define, develop and deploy system monitoring requirements/thresholds as well as corrective actions.
Document all operational processes and procedures to optimise support and management of deployed systems.
Assist internal Salesforce Technology teams in performing Production Operations tasks including systems monitoring, performing diagnostics, problem isolation and solution deployment by providing expert-level operational support (training and on-call support).
Represent Operations team and contribute towards new and on-going Technology projects in areas of Scalability, Performance and High Availability.
Engage effectively in technology discussions with Architects.
Develop strong partnerships with Architecture, Project Management, Data Center and Provisioning groups
BS/BA Degree in Computer Science or equivalent industry experience.
5 years of experience (H/W and S/W) implementing high-volume, high-availability storage solutions in a large enterprise environment including: SAN, and Archive solutions with 24x7x365 uptime requirements (eCommerce or Internet experience desirable).
5 years experience and ability to work proficiently within server operating systems (Linux/Solaris) including file system, volume management software, and networking concepts.
Candidates will handle installs, configurations, and upgrades for the Storage and SAN hardware.
Experience with the Cisco MDS and/or Brocade FC product line, HBA firmware, multi-path software, and SAN fabric management.
Experience in several different forms of replication (e.g. SRDF, TrueCopy/HUR, Oracle Image Copy)
Experience with managing storage for Oracle RAC databases
Proven ability to conduct detailed performance analysis tasks as it related to the entire I/O stack.
Practical experience with DR testing and execution, RAID, data migrations, and business continuity is desirable.
Experience with command line tools for EMC, Hitachi, Cisco and/or Brocade.
Proven experience executing upgrades, capacity increases, and reallocation of storage resources.
Experience with capacity management and planning.
Understands fundamentals of networking, including the OSI model, network segmentation best practices, routing, and common protocols and concepts.
Experience working in large, load-balanced environments including managed switches, firewalls, and F5 Load-balancers.
Basic scripting skills in any UNIX shell and Perl with the ability to provide requirements for task automation, resource monitoring and performance monitoring.
Extensive troubleshooting and performance monitoring skills.
Hands-on experience with production hardware life-cycle management.
Working knowledge of system hardening best practices, methods and access control methodologies.
Prior experience working within a regulatory compliance framework.
A demonstrated passion for excellence.
Knowledge of SAN technologies (FCIP, encryption, fabric design and best practices).
Knowledge of Agile Development or Scrum Project Management methodologies.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills, conducive to team development
Ability to work with geographically dispersed teams.
Knowledge of ITIL Industry practices.
