Description:Salesforce has an exciting externship opportunity within its trademark and copyright legal team for the Spring 2019 semester. This law student will work closely with all members of the trademark and copyright team and learn the various aspects of managing a trademark and copyright practice for one of the most innovative companies in the world. This role presents the opportunity to help manage the company's worldwide trademark portfolio, oversee the partner branding program, and advise internal clients and cross-functional teams on cutting-edge trademark and copyright issues across Salesforce’s various cloud-based offerings. The range of responsibilities includes trademark and domain selection, clearance, prosecution, and policing, trademark and copyright licensing, and music licensing, just to name a few.The Legal Extern Will Assist All Members of the Trademark and Copyright Team With the Following Tasks:

  • Advising business on selection of trademarks, conduct global trademark clearances, and prepare risk assessments.

  • Helping manage Salesforce's global trademark and copyright portfolios including selection, clearance, prosecution, maintenance and enforcement matters.

  • Managing trademark conflicts and opposition and cancellations including preparation of relevant evidence

  • Providing litigation support for trademark matters

  • Managing partner and online brand enforcement program

  • Assisting with drafting and negotiating complex intellectual property agreements

  • Assisting in creation, maintenance and management of company branding policies

  • Working closely with the Alliances team and directly with partners on branding and copyright-related issues

  • Providing counseling to internal clients related to marketing and advertising issues

  • Handling both offensive and defensive DMCA issues.

Required Education and/or Experience

  • Must be a 2L or 3L and have taken either an Intellectual Property Survey or Trademark Class.

  • Must be able to demonstrate a strong interest in pursuing an Intellectual Property practice.

  • General familiarity with cloud-based technology preferred

  • Some previous work experience preferred

The successful candidate will have the ability to team well with others and thrive in a fast paced, chaotic but fun work environment. Creativity in finding solutions that fit Salesforce's Aloha culture to achieve customer success is highly valued. Excellent verbal and written communication skills along with the ability to work independently while demonstrating sound judgment are key to success. Basic familiarity with key cloud technologies and the legal issues that arise from the use of those technologies are considered a plus but are not requirements.
